This month we are going to focus on the problem of depression as it is National Depression Awareness Month. This is a major problem in America as more than 19 million Americans are affected by clinical depression.

Treatment for depression is almost always successful. Sadly, less than half of those who have depression seek treatment. The most common reason is that people believe it is not serious and that they can treat it themselves or it is a personal weakness.

Women are more than twice as likely as men to become depressed.

Suicide rates for teens have risen dramatically over the past forty years.

People with conditions like diabetes, heart disease or respiratory conditions such as asthma are more likely to become depressed.

Daily living in a complex society in itself creates numerous problems and frustrations that require dealing with unpleasant situations, places, people, or things. When personal problems become more than we can handle alone, it is wise to discuss these matters with a trained professional counselor.
